Connection

General Settings

• Global Max Download Rate: The range is 1kB/s — Unlimited, by default.
• Global Max Upload Rate: The range is 10kB/s — Unlimited, by default.
• Alternate Max Upload Rate when Not Downloading: This is not ticked by default and the minimum rate is 10KB/s.

1. The default setup is right for most users. ADSL users are recommended to limit the upload rate to 75% of the maximum (tested) upload rate.
2. These settings will be void if you enable Scheduler in the tab.
3. The checkbox “Alternate Max Upload Rate when Not Downloading” is convenient, allowing you to modify your upload rate when there are no downloading tasks running. Please note that this is valid only when there are no downloading tasks, otherwise, the maximum upload rate is dictated by the “Global Max Upload Rate”.

Listen Port

Listen Port: Chosen randomly by default.
Bitcomet has advantages over other BT software in the “one port for many tasks” respect. We suggest common users to keep the default setup. If you need to set “Port Mapping” on your router, please use the listen port.

No listening Mode: will greatly slow down your upload/download rate.
Not recommended. (Exceptions are those who are situated behind routers or firewalls which they cannot access and configure. For them, this setting will provide the means to still be able to download even though at much lower speeds).

Port Mapping

Enable NAT/Firewall configuration in ICS/ICF (XP/Vista Only): Checked by default.
Windows NAT or firewall may cause BitComet to fail to receive connections from tracker or peers. This option can resolve these problems by automatically adding an exception for BitComet.

Enable UPnP port mapping (XP/Vista Only): Checked by default.

Note: In some situations, checking this option may cause some problems such as disconnection or crash. So, it is not recommended to leave this option enabled unless it proved that it works for your system without any reliability issues.

Remove port on NAT/Firewall when exiting: Unchecked by default.
This will remove the port mapping established by the the first option, at BitComet’s exit.

Network Wizard

• In the new version 1.15, we have added this new feature to help users get optimal connection settings when using BitComet, according to their Internet bandwidth and connection type. In the Wizard dialog, users may choose their Internet bandwidth & connection in the left list and our recommended settings will be shown in the right download/upload limit form. Of course, if anyone does not want to use the recommended settings, please choose “custom” and your own settings will be kept.
  • 512K ADSL: Download Limit 50kB/s, Upload Limit 32kB/s
  • 1M ADSL: Download Limit 100kB/s, Upload Limit 32kB/s
  • 2M ADSL: Download Limit 200kB/s, Upload Limit 32kB/s
  • 4M ADSL: Download Limit 400kB/s, Upload Limit 32kB/s
  • 10M Cable Modem: Download Limit 1000kB/s, Upload Limit 200kB/s
  • 10M LAN/FTTB: Download Limit 1000kB/s, Upload Limit 1000kB/s
  • 100M LAN/FTTB: Download Limit 8000kB/s, Upload Limit 8000kB/s
  • Custom: Download Limit — Unlimited, Upload Limit — Unlimited. This leaves users to make settings according to their own particular Internet conditions.

Proxy

• Proxy Type: No Proxy
• Don’t use proxy for tracker/peer-to-peer connections: specifies if you want to bypass the proxy server for connections to the tracker or for connections to peers. (introduced in v.1.20)

Download and Install BitComet

Download BitComet

BitComet can be downloaded from the official website by:

1) left-click the download icon on the web page to download the latest version.

Or 2)Download previous versions from the BitComet Archive. Right-click on the version and package type you wish to download, and select “Save target as…”.

• Please note: it’s not recommended to download versions other than the latest one, unless you have a strong preference on a particular past version.

• Most versions have an installer (Setup) package, and a “green” (.ZIP) package that does not require installation. The installer package is the best choice for most people.

Install BitComet

Navigate to the location where you saved the setup file, double-click it to start the installation.

Select Language

Select your language and click “OK” to continue. (This selects the language for the installer, not for BitComet itself.)

Setup Wizard

The Setup Wizard will guide you through the rest of the installation. Click “Next”.

License Agreement

Read through the License Agreement. You must click “I agree” to continue. If you do not agree, click “Cancel” to exit, and BitComet will not be installed on your computer.

Privacy Policy

The Privacy Policy describes what information we will collect and what we do with it. You must click “I agree” to continue. Otherwise, click “Cancel” to exit, and BitComet will not be installed on your computer.

Choose Components

Select the menu items and shortcuts that you wish to install (see snapshot). Click on the “+” button next to “Browser Integration” to view and control BitComet options to be added to your web browser. The default selections are preferred by most people. Click “Next” to continue.

Installation Location

Select the destination folder where you wish to install BitComet. (The default pathname is preferred by most users). Click “Install” to begin the installation.

Installing

The installation will take a few minutes. Please wait for it to complete.

Other setup

Installation of BitComet is completed, it is recommended to set google.atcomet.com as the homepage (This is optional). You can support us by ticking the box.

Finish Installation

When you see this screen, BitComet has been successfully installed. You have the options to:

• run BitComet now,
• automatically start BitComet when Windows starts (you can change this later if you wish), and
• view the ReadMe file which contains late-breaking news about this version.

Click “Finish” to exit the Setup Wizard.

«Green», or Non-installed BitComet version

(You must already have an archive extraction program installed and know how to use it.)

The archive contains two .exe files: BitComet_Win9x.exe and BitComet.exe.

• BitComet_Win9x.exe is for use with Win95, Win98 or WinMe.
• Use BitComet.exe under Win2K, WinXP, Vista or later versions.

You will only need to install one of them, and you can delete the other one to avoid confusion.

You are expected to know your way around your computer, files, archives and associated terminology. We do not offer support or help for this version. Hence please don’t use the green version if you’re not fully familiar with it.

Upgrade (or Downgrade): Install another version over an existing version

Simply download and install the desired version right over your current version, as stated above.

Tip: The previous (old) Task List and options/preferences remain unaffected by this process.

(If you wish to perform a “clean” install, removing all tasks and options, then uninstall the old version using “Add/Remove Programs”, and delete the installation directory (default is C:\Program Files\BitComet) with all of its contents. Then install the new version as above.)

Possible installation problems related to UAC

User Account Control (UAC) is a technology and security infrastructure introduced along with Microsoft’s Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 operating systems and also present in the subsequent versions such as Windows 7. It aims to improve the security of Microsoft Windows by limiting the access rights of the software applications running in Windows to standard user privileges, by default, until an administrator authorizes an elevation.

Because running the BitComet installation package needs administrator privileges, in certain cases, unsuitable combinations between certain UAC settings and the user account type, may lead to installation failure.

 As a basic guideline you should keep in mind that if you have 
 disabled UAC then you should run the BitComet installer under 
 administrator account to make sure that the process won't fail.

Это самый лучший клиент для скачивания файлов через интернет. Пользуюсь им регулярно. За время использования не было никаких проблем.

When BitComet Starts

• Default task related info pane: Default recommended tasks.
• Verify login password at program startup: No password as default.
  If you share one computer with others, setting a password may better protect your privacy.
• Minimize to system tray at program startup: This option is not ticked by default. Please make changes according to your own need.
  Ticking this checkbox, BitComet’s main window will not show up at the program startup.

Actions

• Minimize to system tray: It’s default as clicking main window’s close button. You can set shortcut according to your own habits.
• When BitComet starts: It’s default as “Show main window”. This determines the display of BitComet when you start it; alternatives include “Show main window”, “minimize to task bar”, and “minimize to system tray”.
• Click minimize button: It’s default as “Minimize to system tray”. You can choose to “minimize to system tray” or to “minimize to taskbar”.

Не секрет, что у многих людей возникают трудности при использовании uTorrent, а ведь он проще. Трудно себе представить, с какими проблемами им придется столкнуться после установки BitComet.Интерфейс BitComet перегружен элементами. Мне пришлось отключить бОльшую часть кнопок и вкладок, прежде чем я смог спокойно начать использование программы.Запутанная система рангов, непонятная не только постигающему азы торрентинга, но и многим другим пользователям, не имеющим познаний в английском. Суть в том, что вам начисляются очки за сидирование торрентов. Очки нужны для получения более высокого уровня (всего их 62), который влияет на скорость скачивания и количество «долгосрочных раздач», к которым Вы можете подсоединиться. Муть, одним словом.Ресурсоёмкость. BitComet в бездействии, когда все задания остановлены, ведёт себя довольно тихо. Однако стоило мне запустить сидирование всего двух раздач, как использование ОЗУ стало расти, пока не остановилось на 178 мб. Затем упало до ~40 мб., однако выяснять, сколько BitComet съест оперативной памяти при 100, 200, 500 активных раздач мне совсем не хочется.BitComet, по-прежнему, добавляет дубли (padding files) при создании торрент-файлов – мусор, невидимый пользователям BitComet, но видимый пользователям других BitTorrent-клиентов.BitComet запрещён на многих торрент-трекерах, особенно закрытых (частных).Содержит большое количество рекламы.

BitComet is a free BitTorrent client and also a download manager for HTTP/FTP having the ability to support multiple simultaneous downloads.

It is a complex multi-threaded and multi-protocol file-sharing software with plenty of features (some of them being unique) such as (1 — BitTorrent related) long-term seeding, torrent share, support for magnet URI and cross protocol download, align file to piece boundary, intelligent optimization for your Internet Connection, intelligent disk cache and allocation (reduces the read/write frequency of your HDD also disk fragmentation), download preview, support for DHT network, auto config for ICF and UPNP, multi-tracker support, UTF-8 extension, UDP tracker Protocol etc. (2 — HTTP/FTP download) support for P2P download, intelligent file rename, download preview, quick resume, multi-mirror and multi-section downloads, upload and download speed limit, support for tags, bandwidth scheduler, automatic shutdown, etc. This application works on all major versions of Microsoft Windows, including both 32-bit and 64-bit platforms.

IMPORTANT: Certain sites lists BitComet as being adware (due to bundled 3rd party offers). FossHub doesn’t list the Installer/Setup version but if you insist you can get it from the official BitComet archive download page here.

BitComet Review

Setup: After reading a dozen of BitComet reviews, I decided to read carefully, both the «License Agreement» and «Privacy Policy» before installing the program. Except for the 3rd party offer where you need to be careful, the installation is (for the version that I tested — 1.37) common with other free programs and easily enough for everyone.

Main Usage: The main software interface looks similar to most programs. To keep it short, you have the regular navigation menu at the top of the app, right under you have large menu buttons which perform the same functions, but they are easier to work with. On the left side, you have a section named «Channels» containing links to popular torrent websites and in the middle you have the «classic» window showing downloaded files, including the additional fields (comments, previews, time left, seeds/peers, size, etc.). The last section found at the bottom is a mixture for tracker and peer info, but it also shows an ad (probably that’s why certain sites list this program as being adware) and also offers a «Sign In» or «Sign Up» to other services.

What I don’t like: I am not a fan of ads inside the software or 3rd party offers but as long as I, as a regular user, I am allowed to disable them (e.g. Privacy Policy, section — Uses: «You can disable the function of «Search for mirrors» in «Properties» of a download task at any time. With this function disabled, the Software does not contact BitComet during your downloading.») I guess it’s acceptable. Also, a few sites block BitComet due to several issues from the past, but that’s not relevant as it’s not related to the program itself.

What I like: It’s stable and mature enough, the first version was released back in 2003, so it has more than a decade of development. It’s fast; I have tested all download types: Torrent, HTTP, and FTP. As a comparison, I used other popular BitTorrent clients and download managers, and BitComet were able to max out my connection, and that’s excellent. You have certain features that you can’t find at other similar tools such as: Intelligent Disk Cache (at least for Solid-state drives this function must be very useful) proprietary file sharing protocol, fetch identical files from other torrents, «anonymous downloads» (this isn’t free but not expensive), eMule Plugin (useful if you want to find seeds in the ED2K network if there is no seed available in the BitTorrent network), both 32 and 64 bit versions etc.

Conclusion: Probably the biggest advantage of using BitComet is that you have several programs (BitTorrent client plus P2P — HTTP/FTP) inside one. Add a large amount of features and support for them (a Wiki section) and there you go: you have an excellent, (I would dare to say) underrated, free file-sharing software.

BitComet Status Bar

Go to Main Menu→“View”→“Status Bar” to show/hide the Status Bar.

• Operation track:
  1. Show operation tracks at main menu；
  2. Show number of selected/displayed/total tasks.

• CometID: This will remind you to sign in if you have not done so; If you have, your username will be shown in the CometID pane. Read more

  • Right-click: Sign in/ Sign out of CometID.
  • You are not required to sign in to CometID in order to use BitComet. You may ignore it entirely, if you so desire.

• DHT Network: Indicates whether your client has connected to the DHT network. The number of DHT nodes your client knows about is shown when the DHT Network is connected.

• Status Light: BT Client connection status.
  • Right-click: Check again, Copy IP, Help.
    1. Check again: Re-check the connection status. Usually needed after a change in system setup or network that didn’t require a reboot.
    2. Copy IP: Copy the IP address and port number shown here, to the clipboard.
    3. Retry UPnP port mapping: This option is only available when you enable UPnP in “Options”. Click and BitComet will attempt to remap via UPnP again.
    4. Help: Click to view Help about the status light. Read more.

Status Light

When you start a BitComet session and are not in “No Listen Port” mode, your client sends a message to a BitComet probe server, requesting that the server send a probe to your IP address and listen port. Your client listens at the port for the probe, in order to determine the port’s status. The status light is an indication of, but is not definitive proof of your listen port status.

Gray: Unknown

A gray light means your client did not get a response to the connection attempt, from the probe server. The server may be down and unresponsive. The server may be blocked by your ISP, or may be temporarily unreachable due to network conditions. If this condition persists:

1. You might have a network problem. See whether you can connect to anybody, by any means, anywhere.
2. Your third-party firewall might be blocking BitComet. Make sure BC is allowed to access the Internet on all ports. (Do NOT disable your firewall! Configure it.)
3. The probe server might be down. Check the BitComet support forum for announcements of extended down time
4. Software you’ve installed might be blocking you. Check for software changes which might block connections to IP ranges.
5. Your ISP may block connections to the BitComet server. There is no solution for this. Try alternative methods mentioned below.
6. Rarely, it might just be a minor network glitch. Simply try again later.

Click here for to verify that your listen port is open — an open listen port is equivalent to a green status light.)

Yellow: Blocked

An yellow light means BitComet successfully requested the probe, but did not detect it at your listen port. This indicates that the port is blocked by one or more firewalls. Your client can therefore reach other clients but other clients can not initiate contact with your client.

If your listen port is blocked you can still transfer files with BitComet, but your transfer speed probably won’t be very high.

If you control the firewall(s) that block the port, the it/they may be fixed by following the Create Firewall Rules and Port mapping guides. Read the Port Forwarding Guide on the forum, too.

If the firewall blocking the port is not under your control, then there is probably nothing that you can do about this and your client must operate in “No Listen Port” mode. If you have multiple firewalls, your listen port must be open on all of them. It only takes one to block the port.

Green: WAN

A green light means that BitComet requested the probe and received it on your listen port. This indicates that your listen port is open, so other peers can initiate contact with you through your firewall(s). An open port will provide you with the best transfer rates.

Virus Scan

Scan virus upon task download finish: Unchecked by default.
This is out of safety considerations for your computer. If you have installed antivirus software on you computer, click “Auto Detect” and BitComet will detect the local antivirus software and scan your downloaded files. If BitComet fails to detect the antivirus software on your computer, you can add your own software manually.

1. Anti Virus program path: Click “Browse” to select your antivirus software;
2. Execute parameter: You can look up the help documentations of the antivirus software for help.
3. Extension name of files which will be scanned: Default types: {.exe; .com; .dll; .scr; .ocx; .zip; .rar; .doc}. You can add or remove the file types according to your own need. If you do not have any anti-virus program on your computer, you can install one at your own choice from the may free or payed versions out there.

Method 4 — Shortcuts to opening a .torrent file on your computer

1) Drag-and-drop the .torrent file into BitComet floating Window

2) Drag-and-drop the .torrent file to BitComet Main Window

Tip: You can drag’n’drop multiple .torrent files onto the BitComet UI; they will all be added to the Task List, one after another.

Shortcut: Search torrent from BitComet

Bitcomet supports direct torrent download from webpage and it will automatically begin a BitTorrent download when the .torrent file download is done.

For Example：Using search function in Bitcomet interface.

Enter the keyword for the resource you want to download and you will be redirected to an objective website;

Select one record from the list;

Click “Download this torrent!” to continue;

A BT Task pop-up dialog appears after the .torrent file download has finished. Click “Download Now” to continue.
